"This piece features the terrifying Chordodes formosanus, a parasite that develops inside of the praying mantis. The whiplike worm essentially takes over the mantis' nervous system and is able to then control the mantis, usually guiding it to water so that its own reproductive cycle can continue. (It is also eating the mantis from the inside out.) If the mantis enters a state of distress, the parasite will very quickly 'abandon ship.'"
