One day I was standing in the middle of Herald Square, not far from my studio on West 34th St. Booming out of a car stuck in traffic on 6th Avenue, was the music from Kraftwerk's TransEurope Express with the words, "Rock, Rock the Planet Rock."
It wasn't sampling, it was just changing the words. The group was Soulsonic Force on Tommy Boy Records and this was the first big rap hit.
My first hip-hop group.
When SSF showed up in my studio for this publicity photo, I was amazed by the elaborate costuming and by the physical size of these gentlemen. Afrika Bambatta and Mr. Big were just that… I was finding feathers and beads for months afterwards.
They were so big that the background paper wasn't wide enough.
